Risks Online

These days it can sometimes seem as if children are conducting most of their lives over the Internet - whether to make friends on social networks sites such as Facebook or Bebo, or to chat away in forums or over instant messenger applications such as Windows Live Messenger.

Although these can be a great mechanism for helping children communicate with friends and build relationships, they can also pose significant risks. Paedophiles also use such communities to prey on children - whether approaching them directly in a bid to groom them, or worse pretending to be children to first gain their trust.

The problem is that it is very easy to create online personas, but it is much harder to determine if a persona you encounter is genuine or not. Children can be completely unaware of the danger - they want to make lots of friends - but do they actually know whom they are talking to? Could you be sure whom you are talking to?

Try our simple chat game to see if you can work out who you are talking to.

Select questions from the drop down list and you will get a reply back. After asking seven questions you will then be asked to guess the gender and age of who you are talking to.
